ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses Advocacy Biographic Profiles that inform the stories we tell about student writers. We present ways to observe, describe and discuss student writing that mirror the understandings gained about readers through miscue analysis. We share an example from a study of emergent bilingual writers in an ESL classroom. Through a Writing Process Observation protocol, we document the strategies and resources writers draw upon. We introduce the Written Document Analysis, which describes writing proficiency in terms of message and craft.
