ABSTRACT

This chapter narrates and analyzes emergent curriculum in a preschool classroom during what became known as the “airport study.” Emergent curriculum is foundational to the Reggio Emilia early childhood education pedagogy; children generate ideas for long-term studies and teachers support their ideas through intentional curricular moves in response to children’s interests, experiences, and meaning making. The chapter illustrates the Reggio practice of pedagogical documentation to reclaim curriculum that responds to children’s manifestations of curiosity and creativity.
