ABSTRACT

This chapter first outlines the affordances of using corpora for writing instruction at different stages of the writing process. The use of corpora for general English for academic purposes (EAP) writing, for disciplinary writing and for English as a france lingua/English as a second language (EFL/ESL) writing contexts is discussed and illustrated with key case studies. The use of corpora for general EAP writing covers (1) initiatives in which corpora are used as a standalone resource to teach the language and rhetoric of EAP writing and (2) initiatives in which corpora are integrated into EAP writing programmes. The use of corpora for disciplinary writing is illustrated by case studies from different disciplines (science and engineering, law, psychology), which take either a top-down approach or bottom-up approach as the starting point for corpus work. EFL/ESL materials which include corpus-informed writing sections are also included. Quantitative and more qualitative studies evaluating the efficacy of corpus consultation are reviewed. The final section of the chapter looks at ongoing and future developments of corpus pedagogy for writing. These include expansion of corpora into other languages, expansion of corpora into other settings such as secondary schools and workplaces and the development of user-friendly tools to accommodate different writing levels.
