ABSTRACT

While the integration of corpus linguistics into English language teaching is now quite normalised, its inclusion in English language teacher education programmes has progressed more slowly. This chapter outlines changes that have occurred in teacher education over the past ten years and how corpus-based approaches align well with the current context. It explores three ways in which general and specialised corpora can be used to support student teachers and teacher educators during formal education programmes and in their continuous professional development. The first is to develop pedagogic awareness and practice, both in terms of how to use corpora in English language teaching classrooms and how corpora collected from classrooms can provide a rich dataset for student teachers to explore pedagogy in peripheral ways before first-hand experience. The second is to increase language awareness in terms of language systems and discourse approaches. Thirdly, the social practices of teacher education can be explored through a corpus lens to help the profession better understand the norms and practices of this community.
