ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of applications of corpus linguistics to language testing and assessment. Considerations of test development and validation are discussed, followed by an historical overview of how corpora have been used in language testing over the past several decades. In particular, the availability of large learner and reference corpora, along with more natural language processing tools, have allowed for important innovations in testing such as automated scoring and feedback engines. Examples of how corpus data can be useful in test development and validation are provided. Finally, several caveats and future directions are provided.
