ABSTRACT

Within the global context, universal early childhood provision and inclusive education have become widely accepted as desirable practice, though many recognise that they are not always easy to achieve. This chapter addresses ways that rights to education and inclusion of young children with disabilities in Kenya may be protected and promoted. The chapter considers international policy and national legislation concerning universal inclusive education in Kenya, before presenting and discussing a series of interventions adopted by Girl Child Network for its work with young children in Kenya. The interventions illustrate the experiences, challenges and lessons learned by workers at Girl Child Network as they have attempted to translate policy into practice to protect the rights of young children with disabilities to experience education in Kenya as do their peers who do not have disabilities.
