ABSTRACT

Like many of you, I have strong opinions regarding education in the United States today, especially in the sciences. I always wanted to make an impact, inspire, and innovate. But I never expected students to pay attention, or care, or absorb anything that I had to impart. Why should I? If I wanted to get a message across, if I wanted students to listen to me, then I had to actively listen to them first. The process of education is an interaction. Listening builds trust, and trust is necessary for real learning.
