ABSTRACT

The Recipe 4 Success preventive intervention seeks to reduce obesity risk in young children living in poverty. Recipe 4 Success was inspired by empirical research and created through the collaboration of a large team of university researchers and community-based partners. Embedded within Early Head Start home visits, Recipe 4 Success teaches parents to sensitively scaffold children’s self-regulation as a means of reducing obesity risk. It does this in the context of food preparation activities which provide multiple practice opportunities and exposure to healthy snacks and meals. The synergy of this team of university researchers and community-based partners resulted in an ambitious and innovative approach to behavior change that is sensitive to the context in which it is implemented.
