ABSTRACT

Automation of land registry functions in Australia was an inevitable progression from computerisation of the Torrens registers in the 1980s. Pervasiveness of the internet and improvements in computer coding and logic since that time presented registrars with new opportunities to improve registry services through automation of both lodgement and registration functions. This chapter evaluates the impact of this new era of automation on the integrity of the Torrens land register, with a focus on impacts from the reallocation of responsibilities between conveyancers, the registrar and the automated computer system.
