ABSTRACT

This chapter describes antiliberalism as a mindset that is adversarial to liberalism and demonizes it. Its constitutive elements include the belief that the many obvious flaws of liberal societies today are due to genetic defects in liberalism itself. It is accusing liberalism of individualism and universalism and stands for identity politics and localism. The chapter claims that the criticism of liberalism distorts the philosophical and political tenets of liberalism, in particular that liberalism does take into consideration the social nature of humans. Together with a liberal alternative to tribalism, it provides a justification of liberalism. It discusses the antiliberal criticism of meritocracy and free speech. By creating an institutional order of free speech, liberalism guards against the damaging consequences of false certainty. The chapter raises the issue of the intellectual responsibility of antiliberal intellectuals who disregard their professional obligations with the distortion of liberal positions, values, and simple facts.
