ABSTRACT

Israel’s defense expenditures amount to more than $5 billion per year. The Israeli defense budget reflects (in monetary terms) the major objectives, priorities and activities of the Israeli defense establishment in a given year. The budget, which now accounts for some 30% of the country’s overall budget, is primarily earmarked for reinforcement of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and for operation and maintenance of that security system. The budget comprises both military (IDF) and civilian (the Ministry of Defense) components and includes such budget items as procurement from domestic and foreign sources, military personnel expenditures, construction costs and civilian emergency expenditures. Since the Six Day War in 1967, the budget has also included certain allocations for the Administered Territories.
