ABSTRACT

My own research lies very far from the domain of international relations, and, for the past twenty-five years, has been far also from the domain of organization theory. For that reason, I am unable to make a technical contribution to this volume that honors Harold Guetzkow. An amateur effort would not bear the scrutiny of his standards, which are uncompromising. Instead, I shall engage in some reminiscences of my long friendship with Harold—extending back more than fifty years—and some observations, not to be confused with science, about fundamental research in international relations, the intellectual venture in which Harold has been engaged through a large part of his career.
