ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the scientific literature on environmental communication published in French. Environmental communication in the French-speaking world can be considered as a meta-field whose exclusive research focus is on environmental issues. The chapter begins with a diachronic-historical presentation of the emergence of this field in French “info-com” research. Francophone researchers are also interested in analyzing discourses dedicated to climate change and the environment. They particularly study the discursive constructions of climate change, performative strategies in environmentalists’ discourse, discursive strategies mobilized to express emotions due to climate events, and correlations between the climate agenda and popular science journals aimed at young people. Following an inductive analysis of existing studies, we found that French-language research converges toward three main themes, namely the climate agenda and its communicative implications in society, discourse and narratives of sustainable development, and the strategies, attitudes and behaviors of actors.
