ABSTRACT

The central challenge of the emerging era is building community—not just an economic and political structure but a new culture of “we are all in it together.” A pluralist commonwealth is undergirded by four principles: democratization of wealth, community as a guiding theme, decentralization, and democratic planning. Democratic control both within enterprises and communities—local, regional, and national—are central to the longer-term design, and multiple forms of democratic ownership would be encouraged. Embedded in the concept of “community” are localism—national powers would devolve to states and localities—and broad inclusion.
