ABSTRACT

Rejecting what Tibor Scitovsky called “the joyless economy,” a radically new system can be designed to create and sustain joy—a system not based on acquiring money and goods but based on encouraging and sustaining human solidarity, devoted friendship, and meaningful accomplishment. Such a system is more democratic and structured to ensure that economic benefits are shared equitably and is committed to sustaining the environment for current and future generations. The changes such a system would bring would affect all dimensions of life, with the result that life would be simpler, and people would be more caring and less grasping and status-conscious.
