ABSTRACT

A cooperative commonwealth is a system of interlocking, grassroots solidarity enterprises that establish and strengthen economic participation from the bottom up. In the cooperative solidarity commonwealth, the economy is centered on need, not profit. Economic and political power are decentralized, and wealth is democratically controlled and distributed. Since true economic democracy is not possible in a racist and sexist society, anti-oppression and nonexploitation work would be an imperative, and in the United States local groups of marginalized peoples and their allies would be the builders of this system.
