ABSTRACT

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is defined broadly as a developmental disability associated with significant deficits in communication, behavior, and social interaction that affect daily functioning and usually last throughout a person’s lifetime. This case study seeks to deepen participants’ understanding of special needs populations by employing information about ASD in order to decide regarding the use of funding for disaster management. In the process, they will think through the consequences of ASD for disaster managers, who will be confronted with children displaying behaviors that complicate the task of keeping them safe from harm during emergencies.
