ABSTRACT

Warnings are a process that includes detection of the threat, content of the message, and the perception of the message itself. This exercise focuses on warning communications to highlight disparities in receiving information and the ability to take appropriate protective action for an impending threat. Protective action is related to a person receiving the emergency message and being able to evacuate, seek shelter, or move away from the threat, as requested in the warning message. This exercise typically accompanies lessons about social vulnerability and/or the warnings. To that end, the exercise is based on understanding social vulnerability, the socio-political ecology theory, and warning processes.
