ABSTRACT

Preparedness for active shooting events has been a priority issue for school systems, law enforcement, emergency medical professionals, and emergency management since the 1999 mass shooting at Columbine High School. As components of general preparedness lack consensus, the integration of access and functional needs of persons with disabilities and other cultural aspects that affect preparedness and response have also lagged. This chapter focuses on the integration of access and functional needs and preparedness activities. The goal of this exercise is to engage participants with content knowledge in aspects of emergency planning in the recognition of unique aspects of preparedness for schools with high populations of students with access and functional needs.
