ABSTRACT

Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu’s “Carmilla” is a key text in nineteenth-century gothic literature. In the story, the young girl Laura, living with her father in a remote Styrian castle, meets the mysterious and beautiful Carmilla Karnstein. Over the course of the tale, the two women develop an intimate romantic relationship. However, it is revealed that Carmilla is in truth a vampire and has been feeding on the girl. Laura’s father can barely prevent the girl’s death by dispatching the revenant in time. The ritualistic disposal of Carmilla is undertaken by a group of men, with Laura being left behind at her family’s castle. She gathers her “account of this last shocking scene” from the report of an “Imperial Commission”. Finally, whereas television is a hybrid medium incorporating film, radio, newsprint, and other media, the web series can additionally tap the potential of the internet and online culture.
