ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with important issues in planning continuing education programmes. Since learning by practice is a very effective way of learning, a case study is presented here which describes the planning and implementation of a continuing medical education (CME) programme for general practitioners in the province of Limburg, the Netherlands. It starts with some background information on CME for general practitioners. The organisation of CME courses for general practitioners in the Dutch province of Limburg is presented in the chapter as a case study to show the evolution of planning concepts through the interaction between a medical faculty and general practitioners, supported by field studies concerned with CME planning. Theoretically CME planning is an easy matter: CME is to be designed to eliminate existing deficiences in health care delivery and is also to include new developments in medicine and health care.
