ABSTRACT

This chapter is an account of how a framework for a series of CPD events was made in some local government design offices. The objectives of the exercise were to help the offices to articulate what were the most urgent matters requiring attention, to put CPD dealing with them into effect and to appraise how well it was done. Authors were concerned with designing a framework for courses and individual learning to take place — making an architecture for learning within which events can be mounted. Each of author client offices was very large, typically having 170 staff. Of these about half are the designers of new buildings or major alterations to existing ones: architects, service engineers, quantity surveyors, technicians, plus smaller groups of interior designers, land surveyors and so forth. The other half of the staff are concerned with the maintenance of the building stock: they are mainly building surveyors and services engineers.
