ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the developing attitudes and strategies towards learning as young people move from play group toward high school. Part of the learning in the playgroup is 'social' in that there is positive encouragement to 'share' and to treat property and people with respect. The learning situation, particularly in secondary schools is largely constructed in words. The learning situation or situations experienced by the pupils clearly affects their attitude to each other as learners. In the playgroup itself the children moved from ignoring, to watching, to joining in activities over a period of time. These activities were numerous: making and manipulating playdough, sand and water activities, lotto and snap games, constructing and using a wooden railway track, bricks, painting, woodwork, printing, gluing boxes and other objects, and corporate activities like singing and story time.
