ABSTRACT

Schools and colleges are involved in promoting values. This is an inescapable part of the educational task—the development of persons through the selection and promotion of significant learning experiences. The introduction of pupils to a set of values is an inescapable task of education. This chapter suggests ways in which schools might develop a curriculum that is centrally concerned with values. In an atmosphere of ethical scepticism, it is difficult to argue for the promotion of one set of values rather than another. It discusses curriculum policy that transcends subject boundaries and a curriculum policy that looks at the explicit contribution of different sections of the formal curriculum. The moral atmosphere of the school or classroom seems to be the key element in translating thought into action and in ensuring the personal and moral growth of the individual pupil.
