ABSTRACT

Game developer Aaron Rasmussen's experience of temporary blindness not only inspired him to create a game called BlindSide with fellow American developer Michael Astolfi, but it also captured the imagination of online communities who invested in the game's development. Rasmussen and Astolfi raised funds on the crowdsourcing platform Kickstarter to develop the game. A decade on, the development of BlindSide represents a significant point in game design and disability that deserves further consideration. In this chapter Professor Mike Kent engages in a dialogue with the BlindSide creators. The trio reflect on the motivations and inspiration behind BlindSide, the intended audience for the game and its response from the disability community, and the significance of an engaged, passionate player-base, both in terms of game design and funding models.
