ABSTRACT

This chapter examines how characters with disabilities are portrayed in the games we play and how this representation has changed over time. From monitoring a health status to designing a character's physical features, it's critical to consider how these in-game experiences shape our external view of individuals with disabilities in society. We look at three disability types (blindness, physical disabilities, and mental disabilities) and their relationship to character storylines, closing with a reflection on how we can no longer rely on stereotypes when forming character narratives in gaming environments.
