ABSTRACT

In an industry which still struggles to deviate from mainstream and dominant representations of predominantly male, white, and able-bodied characters, Overwatch is an internationally popular team-based multiplayer online videogame that has been applauded for making a conscious effort to embrace diversity. The game's creators have demonstrated this not only in the design of their playable characters, but also their engagement with their player base and fans. In this chapter we focus on a key playable character Symmetra, who is autistic, and examine how the game functions as a vehicle for enabling further conversations about disability and representation.
