ABSTRACT

In the era of #MeToo and #NiUnaMenos, issues of gender representation and equality have emerged in untold contexts internationally, including among musicians in Argentina. This chapter focuses on recent controversies surrounding women's representation in live music performance. The “Live Music Female Quota” was passed into law on November 20, 2019. This first-of-its-kind policy now requires women to comprise at least 30% of musicians in live events. Thus, I consider the issue of more equitable gender representation in live performance from a policy perspective, arguing that the new law could significantly impact women's music careers in ways not often achieved through recorded music making alone. I argue quota policies weaken gender biases implicit in many festivals’ planning agendas, forcing organizers to follow, hire, and promote women artists.
