In key ways, that very statement establishes the 21st-century foundation for architecture and planning. Founder of the Bauhaus in 1919, which has been labelled “the embassy of modernist design”, Gropius would teach his modern approach to architecture students at Harvard from 1937 to 1952. The functionalist paradise proposed by early modern architects, such as Le Corbusier post-WWI, featuring isolated high rises surrounded by empty green spaces and highways, created anomie and disconnection instead of paradise on earth. Founder of the Bauhaus in 1919, which has been labelled “the embassy of modernist design”, Gropius would teach his modern approach to architecture students at Harvard from 1937 to 1952. Surviving a grenade explosion there that knocked him out, he witnessed his captain shot to death in front of him the next day, and early in his military career formed part of a cohort of 250 men, half of whom would die within months.
