ABSTRACT

Glamorized by many and deprecated by others, Cultural Studies disseminated its message of disciplinary disobedience across fields of study, cultures, languages and cultural institutions, affecting academia, journalism, political discourse and intellectual life, as well as the domains of film, music, performance and visual arts. How should we evaluate the contributions and even the shortcomings of this critical approach vis-à-vis the challenges of neoliberalism and globalization? How does Cultural Studies connect with the Latin American archive (the literary canon, cultural traditions and national histories)? What are the new agendas that are guiding the study and the production of culture today? What is the place of Cultural Studies in a world forever transformed by the effects of technology and by massive territorial displacements? This chapter will approach some of these topics in an attempt to analyze the state of the art in connection to the study of culture and to present some problems for debate.
