ABSTRACT

The 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games were a catalyst for social and infrastructure development and reconstruction of urban areas as Japan sought to promote its global image by holding the first Olympic Games in Asia. Tokyo and the north of Japan are undergoing reconstruction and transformation attributed to Tokyo 2020 as the ‘Recovery Olympics.’ This chapter considers the social and urban transformative aspects of the 1964 Games and links forward to the changes associated with the Tokyo 2020 Games and discusses urban transformation, citizenship, and recovery.
