ABSTRACT

In August 2010, with a grant from the Georgia Partnership for Telehealth, the Berrien county school system purchased Rubbermaid Healthcare’s Medi Port. This advanced mobile telemedicine platform offers high-definition video and audio with the ability to share medical records and information in real-time. The Med Clinic at Berrien County Elementary is now the first School-Based Health Centers Capital (SBHCC) in Georgia with telemedicine capabilities. Through the telemedicine platform, the Med Clinic also is able to facilitate consultations with participating physicians in other areas of the county. According to Jansen, apart from two participating systems in Atlanta, Berrien county’s is the only Georgia school system with a school-based clinic, and the state’s only system with telemedicine capabilities. Williams believes telemedicine and School-based health centers aren’t just the future for Berrien county and other southern Georgia school systems, but for other schools across the nation expressing an interest in the program.
