ABSTRACT

Cell phones have had the fastest adoption of any technology in the history of the world. Patients will use some or all of these features to communicate with their clinician or provider and constantly research the best care. Provider-patient roles are transforming from the doctor being the authority and the patient being a child-like recipient of instructions to a partnership in which patient and healthcare provider collaborate. New internal communication patterns represent the first category of mHealth applications that will make a big difference. Medical digital tools represent the second functional app category for clinicians. The success of this category of apps depends on clinicians’ willingness to experiment with new digital tools. Financial tools will help providers, payers and patients have more transparency, efficiency and effectiveness concerning financial transactions. mHealth systems will have a major impact on all healthcare stakeholders.
