ABSTRACT

The success of the healthcare industry is increasingly dependent on engaging people in their health. An engaged person is tapped into a network of people and resources in his or her community who can provide help. An engaged person is empowered to make informed decisions regarding health options. Healthcare providers are adopting more and more tools, practices, technologies and services that contribute to empowering and engaging people in navigating their health actions and outcomes. The design team began with in-depth ethnographic research in-context with women who are struggling with birth control practices. The insights derived from these interviews guided the selection of the right tone of voice , as well as the best technology approach. Design is a fundamentally different approach to engagement. It is optimistic and exploratory. People provide the inspiration, feedback, and purpose necessary to drive good design decisions.
