ABSTRACT

Life is precious, especially when it’s short, and for brief moments, our lives seemed almost normal. For three years People stayed ahead of the cancer. People were outrunning it, outwitting it, enduring monthly treatments, radiation, chemotherapy, and even a stem-cell transplant. One evening, during a brief moment of calm, People were at home watching a movie. Mel Gibson was fighting for the freedom of all Scotland, and things were going okay for people too. The paramedics immediately begin work saving his life. There’s no second guessing, no questions, no arguments. The paramedic’s record is digitally transmitted to the hospital in preparation for receiving the patient. During times of great stress, as humans People somehow summon up the strength to “get through it,” not even recognizing where the strength comes from. Medical records are a detailed accounting of a very specific and important part of this journey. They recount health and illness, the actions taken, and the reasons for them.
