ABSTRACT

Kaiser Permanente is one of the United States’ largest integrated healthcare organizations, providing both insurance coverage and care to more than 9 million members in nine states and the District of Columbia. The healthcare organization has implemented an electronic health record (EHR) system, Kaiser Permanente HealthConnect, across all of its clinics and hospitals and offers online record access and transactions for members to help them manage their own health. In addition to the features just noted, users of the system are able to access their medical records, including medications, allergies, immunizations, ongoing health conditions, and past visit information. Members can also sign up to receive healthcare reminders and estimate the cost of care. They can also access My Health Manager on behalf of their children or another adult, under a carefully designed proxy authentication program.
