ABSTRACT

Two of the hallmarks of mobile health are accessibility and scalability. They targeted a specific population of patients who had complications during pregnancy and poor no-show rates at the doctor’s office. Young mothers, ranging from 14- to 32-years-old, were sent regular text messages reminding them of upcoming office appointments but also noting predictable milestones like the date of the next ultrasound or a reminder to start shopping for car seats. The outcome was that women who received the text messages received the recommended levels of pre-natal care 9% more than women who did not receive the messages. Dr. Kvedar explains that one of the most intriguing things about text messaging is its intimate quality. In a country which boasts more cell phones than humans United States (US), the Center for Connected Health will continue to use text messaging as a strategy to engage consumers.
