ABSTRACT

The author of this paper is Director of General Services at the Library of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign—the largest library of a state institution in the United States. The change in organizational structure which he proposes is a model which is the basis for the continuing reorganization of that library. That change, which is intended to be substantially completed by the Spring of 1984, consists of a decentralizing of the professional aspects of original cataloguing and subject bibliography accompanied by a centralizing of all general services including the non-professional aspects of copy cataloguing.
