ABSTRACT

A caryatid is a sculpted female figure serving as an architectural support, taking the place of a column or a pillar, supporting an entablature on her head. The Greek term karyatides literally means ‘maidens of Karyai’, an ancient town of the Peloponnese. This chapter presents an account of the walking journey through the Paradise Gate, Southwark Park. It describes the Heygate Estate, the sunken garden on Deacon Way, Abbeyfield Estate, Rotherhithe New Road, Silwood street, and the millennial estate.
