ABSTRACT

Patriarchy functions seamlessly and infinitely through structural foundational borders which are intrinsic to the language and grammar of any gender construct. The #MeToo movements and the Naming and Shaming Lists have, for the first time, allowed women to tell their stories in their own (disembodied) voices, as well as claim agency over the borders around their bodies as self, a border that is systemically violated in the real world. This chapter argues that the #MeToo movement needs to be critically analysed by academia because, in teaching and studying gender, the border separating academics and activism collapses. The discourse of gender cannot but be founded on the activism of bringing about social and political change.
