ABSTRACT

Writing into the largely heterosexual space of the #MeToo movement, Halberstam troubles the perception that non-binary voices are silent because there is no abuse in that context. This chapter is based on a blogpost that discusses queer perspectives on the #MeToo movement. Halberstam’s argument is not that “gays are innocent by comparison”, but that the #MeToo Twitter campaigns and the national discussion of heterosexual abuse seem to be centred on powerful men and young women. He calls for a more widespread conversation about men, women and sex; future freedoms depend, to a certain extent, on a completely reorganised understanding of sexuality and desire, and this chapter urges an analytical shift that relocates ideas of sexual harassment within this more nuanced understanding of its relationship with sexuality.
