ABSTRACT

The chapter compares the impact of the #MeToo Movement and feminist organising in two post-socialist countries: Romania and China. Romanian Feminist Organisations have been active since 2012 and have focused on violence against women. Their organising and efforts have led to social and legislative change. Chinese feminist organisations have also been active since 2012, especially shedding light on sexual harassment. #MeToo in Romania is intersectional, as exemplified by organisations such as E-Romnja, the only feminist organisation of Roma women, the attention feminists give to the protection of women against violence instead of the traditional family as upheld by the recent referendum intended to prevent future legislation enabling LGBT family arrangements. #MeToo in China is also intersectional, as many feminist activists who talk about sexual harassment are also lesbians and do LGBT awareness work. The global #MeToo movement has galvanised public opinion around the world and led to more public interest in the work of feminist organising in Romania and China. However, whereas Romanian feminist organisers cooperate with the local police and legislators, in China feminist organisations have been censored, and feminist activists have been imprisoned, harassed, and displaced.
