ABSTRACT

Li Jun traces the initial impetus of the #MeToo movement in China to its American roots and details its difficult transition to the Chinese context. To avoid internet censorship, #MeToo in China has developed localised hashtags such as “Rice Bunny”, “An Ye Yi Yang” and “Wo Ye Shi”, just as it has developed its own unique agenda in the context of Chinese society. The chapter studies the ways in which the feminist movement and social media have both interacted with and impacted the other in shaping the #MeToo movement in China. Through case studies and interviews, this chapter analyses what institutional resources #MeToo is based on, how silence-breakers and feminists coordinate and negotiate the movement’s agendas, what the mobilisation mechanism is, and whether it has any policy outcomes.
