ABSTRACT

The chapter introduces essential questions regarding the nature of revolutions — why they happen, why they are so hard to anticipate, and why they seem to come out of nowhere. The analysis considers the implications of these questions in order to explain the #MeToo movement as revolution. The author outlines factors that make it difficult to predict revolutions including the difficulty of knowing what people actually think of the status quo, people having different thresholds for taking action, and multiple factors being interdependent. The analysis uses these factors as a framework for analysis for the #MeToo movement.
