ABSTRACT

The chapter posits the world being in the middle of the first mass movement against sexual abuse in human history and sees the global #MeToo movement as having sprung from the law of sexual harassment, quickly overtaking it, and shifting legal guidelines, cultures, and politics everywhere. The analysis considers the movement as demonstrating in action what MacKinnon calls “butterfly politics”, and explains the factors that made #MeToo possible and why, for the first time, it was harder to keep sexual abuse inside than to put it out. Finally, the chapter examines the different elements of the #MeToo movement and speculates on what will extend it and keep it going.
