ABSTRACT

While developing a large-scale ancestral remains repatriation plan, the Royal BC Museum was faced with numerous challenges, both internal and external. The team’s priority has always been the prompt return of ancestral remains to their descendent communities, and it was necessary to navigate between unique community requests, existing provincial legislation, and the absence of museum policy. This chapter will examine the process of developing a flexible museum policy to facilitate the return of ancestral remains, the internal organizational process, and the creation of a guidance document to support communities on their own repatriation journeys.
