ABSTRACT

In the post independent era, both Ambedkar’s constitutionalism, and the ideological heritage of Gandhian Satyagraha, though representing a contradictory feature of Indian Politics has contributed to the success, rather survival, of democracy in India. Satyagraha is reflected in numerous popular mass movements led by Vinoba Bhave, Jayaprakash Narayan, Sundarlal Bahuguna, Anna Hazare, Medha Patkar, Mahendra Singh Tikait, Shankar Guha Niyogi, and others. The major thrust of this chapter is to understand and examine the dynamics of some recent Gandhian modes of non-violence resistance against the forces of power and oppression in contemporary India. In this context a case study of ‘India Against Corruption’ movement (2011–2012) led by Anna Hazare and his cohorts as an illustration of a post-Gandhian legacy and its offshoot the Aam Aadmi Party led by Arvind Kejriwal will be explained.
