ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a review of the disparate stages and milestones that have flowed into the current visual culture. There are many paradigmatic facts that have shifted visual elements, from being a simple accompaniment (with the printed press, for example) to its prevailing relevance (with the development of the latest Virtual Reality systems). In fact, humans have been wagering on visual communication over decades and especially using them as pull factors. This revolution, towards a scenario where the relevance of visual culture has exponentially grown, is framed within the networked society described by Castells (1996). Thus, it is possible to notice how the development of both visual culture and networked society has walked together during the last two decades. The authors explore the influence of the media in the configuration of our current visual culture and, especially, its growing strength.
