ABSTRACT

Over the last decade, the rise of hyperlocal media has transformed the communicative landscape from the proximity areas and serving as an alternative to traditional local media, characterized by their community-oriented essence, active participation and collaboration with the citizenship and an informative offer related to the service journalism. In addition, the low cost of information production and dissemination online has benefited the growing of hyperlocal media. This chapter addresses some of the most significant online media of proximity initiatives in the Spanish-speaking context. The authors highlight the particularities of different Spanish-speaking native online media outlets whose aim are to connect with their near audiences rather than reaching global ones. Likewise, the most salient formats, new ways of connecting with users and the use of new technologies are outlined as ways in which proximity journalism is applying journalistic innovation to its day-to-day.
