ABSTRACT
Academic and research libraries have experienced enormous change during the past thirty years. The national commitment to higher education and research and development provided strong support to research libraries during the sixties when the country was responding to sputnik. Libraries’ collection development efforts received broad support, the dollar was reasonably strong, research materials were —in retrospect —affordable, and research libraries’ collections grew accordingly.
